Cultural Differences in Age Calculation

Different cultures calculate age in unique ways:

  • Traditional Chinese System: People consider a newborn as 1 year old, and their age increases during the Traditional Chinese New Year, not on their birthday. For example, a baby born one day before the New Year becomes 2 years old just two days later.
  • Other Systems: Some cultures count age by including or excluding the current year. For instance, a 20-year-old person might be the same age as someone in their 21st year of life.

Handling Month-End Dates

Calculating age can sometimes be tricky, especially with month-end dates. For example:

  • From February 20 to March 20, the calculation is straightforward: 1 month.
  • From February 28 to March 31, there are two interpretations:
    1. If you count February 28 to March 28 as one month, the result is 1 month and 3 days.
    2. If you treat both February 28 and March 31 as month-end dates, the result is 1 month.

Both methods are reasonable, but this calculator uses the first approach for consistency. Similar scenarios apply to dates like April 30 to May 31 or May 30 to June 30.
